Required Documents

- Passport Photos: Recent passport-style photos

Application Process Step by Step
Step 1: Gather Documents (1-2 months)
Collect all required documents and have them apostilled in your home country. US citizens get the apostille from the US Department of State or their state Secretary of State office.
Step 2: Hire an Immigration Attorney
While not legally required, a Costa Rican immigration attorney makes the process much smoother. Fees typically range from ,000-,500 for the complete application.
Step 3: Submit Application to DGME
Your attorney will submit your application to the Direccion General de Migracion y Extranjeria (DGME). Processing times are currently 6-12 months.
Step 4: Receive Approval and Cedula
Once approved, you will receive your DIMEX card (cedula de residencia), which is your Costa Rican ID. This gives you access to CAJA healthcare, the ability to open bank accounts, and more.
